The first big industry convention and trade expo is vibrating at the starting gate for an estimated 30,000 animal health professionals. The adrenaline is palpable as attendees try to take it all in. I’m unable to join you, so here’s my perspective from nearly 20 years of attending NAVC’s premier expo:
- Manage your personal biosecurity. Every year, some people return with some form of the flu.
- Wear comfortable, supportive shoes. VMX is not the place to break in a new pair.
- Plan three to five exhibitor booth visits each day armed with questions, including inquiries from your practice team. Use the exhibit map to reduce footsteps and walking-around time. Without a plan, the physical exertion can feel like a marathon.
- Take a five-minute break to hydrate, take in the spectacle and people watch at least twice in the morning and afternoon.
- During educational presentations, take notes to share with colleagues and team members. Write down three things you learned and any questions you had.
- Actively journal your experiences and interactions. Share your business cards and note the date on the back of new business cards along with any details worth referring to at a later time; business or personal.
- Finally, remember to rest. You’ll need it when you return to your normal home schedule.
