The problem:
Horses consume concentrates faster by weight compared to forage because of their small particle size and high palatability. Extending the time spent chewing can improve saliva production, nutrient absorption, and gut health and reduce the risk of choking with rapid feed consumption.
Research to understand:
Researchers at Colorado State University sought to determine how common feeders affect feed consumption rate, eating bout rate (time spent eating without lifting their heads), abandoned feed in the feeder and feed waste on the ground.
Feeder type results:
The shallow trough had the greatest feeding time. Horses feeding in troughs also consumed more consistently without raising their heads while minimizing feed waste.

Shallow troughs and other feeders with large surface areas that slow the feed consumption rate, minimize feed waste and help in situations where horses are prone to choke.”
