I often promote the benefits of veterinarians and veterinary technicians talking out loud with clients and sharing what they look for and feel during exams when working with clients’ animals. This kind of vet talk reveals the expertise and depth of veterinary care owners often take for granted. Yet, it is this expertise that is essential to protect animals, people and public health. When clients understand what practitioners are doing and why, they become more attentive observers of their animals. This builds skills that transfer to effective veterinary telemedicine interactions.
Going Beyond 2026 global survey
Animal owners may think they know what happens during a veterinary visit, but a global survey shows there is far more going on than meets the eye. The survey conducted in March and April 2026 by Boehringer Ingelheim included 1,046 qualifying veterinarians from 51 countries. These were three of the most important yet underrecognized aspects of veterinary care:
- Uncovering hidden health problems and pain, identified by 87 percent of pet veterinarians and 60 percent of equine veterinarians
- Protecting food-chain safety, identified by 65 percent of livestock veterinarians
- Surveillance programs to limit spread of disease, identified by 62 percent of livestock veterinarians
