While no surprise to animal health pros, warmer weather could put dogs at a greater risk of xylitol poisoning.
Xylitol is a popular sugar substitute in many of our foods, BUT it is very poisonous to dogs. Ahna Brutlag, DVM, MS, DABT, DABVT, shares a list of common products containing xylitol including ICE CREAM, a preferred treat for dogs at drive-through restaurants. It is found is found in gum, toothpaste, peanut butter and some personal care products, to name a few. Sugar-free whipped cream often contains xylitol as well.
