Black soldier fly’s role as food waste solution, animal feed

Source: Feedstuffs, May 7, 2025. Link. Black soldier flies (Hermetia illucens) are well-suited to help address growing food waste issues. They offer another beneficial use as a protein-rich food source for small livestock or pets. The larva can be harvested and used as feed. Black soldier flies also remove pesticide and pharmaceutical residues, according to Purdue Researcher Laura L. Ingwell, PhD. Black soldier fly larvae are not to be confused with Darkling Beetle (Tenebrionids) larva that are well known as mealworms and frequently raised by ornithology, poultry and reptile enthusiasts <Link>.
