Researchers may have documented the first evidence of a wolf using a tool, according to footage published in the journal “Ecology and Evolution.” In the video captured last year, a wolf used a fishing float to bring a crab trap to shore. Once she could reach the trap, she tore it open and ate the bait that was being used to catch an invasive crab species.

The camera shut off before it could show whether the animal had learned to finish the job and eat the bait. But afterward, two traps were seen on the shore with their bait cups removed.
For better or for worse, as humans, we tend to afford more care and compassion to other people or other species that we see most like us.” Kyle Artelle, State University of New York College and Environmental Science and Forestry.
