Richard Gerhold, DVM, says treating backyard opossums, raccoons and other undomesticated animals like companions is a mistake. My big concern is when people start wanting to make wildlife into pets,” says Gerhold. “That’s very dangerous for wild animals and for humans and for domestic animals.” He encourages veterinarians and animal health professionals to spread the word.
