Shown on January 30, 2000, during Super Bowl XXXIV, Cat Herders is a commercial made by Fallon for Electronic Data Systems. Alluding to the management-speak idiom, “It’s like herding cats,” that refers to the impossibility of controlling the uncontrollable, it posits an analogy between herding cats and solving seemingly impossible problems <Link>.
25 years later, herding cats may well take on a different context when journalists like those at FelineFam review how societies in different U.S. locales have supported and promoted cats’ rights to freely roam. That said, community trap-neuter-return programs do a fair job of curtailing populations where man becomes a sort of predator against future kittens.
Obviously, if the bird flu mutates and becomes more virulent cat-to-cat or cat-to-human, it is a significant concern as there are broadly 30 to 100 million unowned cats <Link> wandering and occupying outdoor spaces and habitats.
While science supports TNR programs animal health pros actively promote keeping cats inside or confined as best practices, the feral and free-roaming cat population continues to grow and beg for better solutions.” – Kirk Augustine
