To remind pet owners to have their pets microchipped and to keep registration information up to date, AVMA and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) created “Check the Chip Day.” Heather Loenser, DVM, shared these top reasons to microchip pets:
• You’ll improve your chance of being reunited with your pet
• It’s quick
• It’s inexpensive
• It helps provide proof of ownership if your pet is stolen
• You love your pet
• Checking the chip can be a positive experience
Source: Fear Free Happy Homes, August 12, 2019. Link. While there are many different microchip companies and recovery databases, the AAHA Universal Microchip Pet Lookup Tool < link > simplifies things for animal hospitals and rescue organizations by identifying a microchipped pet’s registry.
INSIGHTS: Some veterinary teams check for microchips each time they see an animal. It is a good practice to make part of any exam. Groomers and pet sitting locations need to adopt it as well.
