In parts of southwestern Virginia, North Carolina and West Virginia, it’s nearly time for a once-in-17-year emergence and mating season. As many as 1.5 million Brood IX cicadas could emerge per acre.

Nymphs will hatch from the eggs and make a home for themselves under the soil until it’s time to shine, years from now.
