With treatment and care information given in different forms yearly, it’s assumed most owners will follow prescribed actions to help their horses battle their gastric ulcers. But, it requires owners to make adjustments to their daily routines.
Ideally, the ulcer medication omeprazole needs to be given to horses on an empty stomach to allow the stomach to thoroughly absorb the medication. If the horse has not fasted prior to being given the medication, absorption is impaired.

- Stick to recommended medication timelines
- Offer unlimited forage
- Offer unlimited turnout
INSIGHTS: We noted the reference to giving information multiple times in different forms. Too often animal health pros feel they’ve told “the story” multiple times only to find out several clients have fallen into the “one and done” category. Compliance with recommendations requires repetitive communication.
