In recent dog food recall announcements, we noted comments about how dog food is stored. Storage information is not readily found on several brands’ websites. After a bit of digging here’s what we found.

We reviewed packaging and labels from more than 12 brands for storage instructions, finding only, “store in a cool dry location” on a few bags.

- All wet pet foods must be refrigerated after opening and should be used up within 3 days.
- It is recommended dry kibble be kept in the original bag with the top tightly rolled down, and stored in a cool, dry, preferably dark place.
- To store it in another container, it is best to store the entire bag in the container rather than dumping it out of the bag and storing the container, away from excessive light and heat.
INSIGHTS: Given all the brands’ efforts to have a safe bag for kibble storage, it is surprising there is not more storage guidance provided on packaging and websites. Consider including one or more of the articles here on social media and in newsletters. Also share the guidance with team members.
