The recent discoveries of HPAI in goats and cows have caused escalating discussions of biosecurity in livestock production. Swine and poultry producers have been dealing with this need for some time, but compliance to biosecurity measures remains challenging. Ann Hess shares some of the challenges and survey results she discussed with Pipestone’s Rachel Stika Jensen, DVM.
Stika Jensen suggests looking at the five Ps of biosecurity for each production site: pigs, people, property, products and pests.

If we do have a set of standards the execution of them is not always done or not always consistent . . . We cannot forget biosecurity is a 24-hour-a-day, seven-days-a-week, 365-days-a-year job, with no days off.”
