The Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine is a big step closer to reality as of last Friday. The Texas Legislature’s Conference Committee for the state budget voted to include $17.4 million to establish the school at Texas Tech in Amarillo. The budget is now on its way the House and Senate before getting Governor Greg Abbott’s signature.

There are only 180 large-animal veterinarians serving rural Texas counties – only 3 percent of the state’s registered veterinarians, according to the Texas Tech University School of Medicine. The Texas Tech veterinary school will focus its educational program on large-animal veterinary medicine, setting up a distributive model, rather than on-site education, that would see veterinarians partner with the school.
