A new survey study from Iowa State University (ISU) reveals the challenges of biosecure swine production and the variations of adoption of biosecure measures. It also highlights opportunities to help increase biosecurity measures. For animal health pros, the challenges in these results further underscore the themes of compliance across all species. Specifically, note the adoption variances between the three elements of a Secure Pork Supply Plan:
- Written site-specific biosecurity plan
- Defined perimeter buffer area
- Defined line of separation

We are excited about the possibilities this data will open up for us to understand the complexities of disease management and help provide insight for producers, industry stakeholders and policymakers,” says Christopher Pudenz, ISU economics doctoral student.
INSIGHTS: Compliance variances demand continual education. Education about disease management is not a one-shot activity. Companion animal pros working with shelters and breeders will find similarities in management challenges and may find practices that easily cross over.
