First calf heifers need special attention. Simply put, Mother Nature tells the heifer to direct nutrients toward growth before nutrients are directed towards reproduction. Therefore first-calf heifers undergo an average three to four weeks longer period of postpartum anestrus than mature cows.

INSIGHTS: Calving is a busy time and it is easy for producers to aggregate all cows and calves in a group location. First calf heifers have different needs than the older cows and may require a separate location. Consider sending this article to cow-calf producers in your client base.
