Springtime colics are typically caused when gas builds up from a horse ingesting forage that is high in sugar like lush spring grass. The rich grass causes excessive fermentation to occur in the gut, which can create a buildup of gas. With only one way to escape sometimes the gas builds up in pockets causing pain since horses can’t burp.
