When it comes to sustainability, beef has received much criticism, writes C. Alan Rotz, PhD. His article covers the changes, challenges and improvements in beef production over the past 50 years. We’re sharing some key statements from the article.
Over the past 50-year period:
- Yields of the major feed crops used for cattle production increased
- The number of beef cows maintained as breeding stock decreased by 27 percent
- The portion of the dairy herd harvested each year increased by 38 percent
- The dress weight of all cows harvested increased by 37percent
- Cattle finish weight grew steadily with the weight in 2022 about 44 percent greater than in the early 1970s
- Changes in feed production, animal performance and overall management have led to many improvements in environmental sustainability.

The industry can take pride in the improvements made and that improvements continue.” – C. Alan Rotz, PhD
INSIGHTS: Rotz’s review is a solid background, as he has memorialized progress and the results of continuous improvement efforts by cattle producers and our industry. Although those who don’t understand will continue to scrutinize production practices and environmental concerns, we can be pleased to have this evidence of our ongoing commitment and efforts to produce protein responsibly.
