The second annual Animal Pain Awareness Month is being sponsored this month by the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management (IVAPM). The IVAPM is a multi-disciplinary organization dedicated to promoting, enhancing, and advancing pain management in animals. Scheduled to coincide with human medicine’s Pain Awareness Month, its theme is “Because their pain is our pain.”

‘Education is paramount to diagnosing and treating pain,’ Michael Petty, DVM, co-author of the 2015 AAHA/AAFP Pain Management Guidelines, past president of the IVAPM, and author of Dr. Petty’s Pain Relief for Dogs, told NEWStat.
Veterinary staff can download free resources from the IVAPM website. They include a “The Most Common Signs of Pain in Your Pet” poster, feline and canine questionnaires to assess patient pain, and other pain-related articles.
INSIGHTS: Representatives who sell pain management products can use company resources during this month to help practice customers with their communication methods with their clients. Help them use trial programs available from some NSAID suppliers.
