Senior citizens have internet power. Sixty seven percent of them in the U.S. use the internet today, according to the Pew Research Center. Sheree Johnson, CEO of SJ Insights, a marketing services firm, teaches Introduction to Social Media at a Kansas City area college. In general, the students are 70 or more years old. To better understand seniors’ usage, Johnson set up a panel to assess ways they use social media. It’s the beginning of a longer study. Importantly, it offers a glimpse into customers animal health pros serve.

Here are just a few highlights from the initial test panel of 75 seniors:
- 50% of participants have been on Facebook for 5 or more years
- 87% login to Facebook twice a day or more
- They are more likely to log-in to view what others are posting vs. posting or uploading something frequently themselves
- 79% follow local news media pages compared to 26% who follow national news pages
INSIGHTS: This panel confirms the opportunities that social media offers animal health pros who meet customers where they are. Consider that the majority of farmers and ranchers are older than 55 years old. Surveys demonstrate their internet usage parallels or bests urban users. As of last year, 40 percent of those 70 years old and older owned pets, a percentage expected to increase.
