The pressure is on fruit and vegetable growers all over the world to implement traceability systems in the next 12 months. USDA’s Gregory Ibach believes the meat industry will be next on the traceability agenda.
USDA took another step toward enhancing the nation’s mandatory animal disease traceablity (ADT) program by requiring official electronic radio-frequency identification (RFID) ear tags for individual animal ID as of January 21, 2013.

This identification increases the accountability for individuals who until now have sometimes been anonymous. . . . it makes it easier to determine who potentially mismanaged the animal, which can lead to increased liability exposure for that person or entity.
INSIGHTS: The USDA plans to begin educational programs in late summer of this year. ADT is a great topic to add to Veterinary Feed Directive compliance visits.
