Jim Sears, DVM with Bayer Animal Health, reminds producers to review and train on the bovine respiratory disease protocols before a shipment of cattle arrives. He offers a few simple tips to simplify your protocol decisions and help operations be efficient in treating BRD:
- Make protocols as simple as possible.
- Be objective – when selecting products, evaluate why each product should be given.
- Set reasonable expectations for each protocol’s effectiveness.
- Don’t overreact to small changes in effectiveness, but when trends in data show you need to change, do.
- Make sure crews understand the protocols and follows them.
- Always talk to the veterinarian about what protocol options might be best
