Since the early pandemic almost five years ago, our industry has been facing, defining and discussing burnout, compassion fatigue, overwork and workplace adjustments to ease various burdens and, of course, avoid suicides. Routinely, our AHD team has questioned whether media is informing or perpetuating these topics. Work, by definition, requires us to apply some force over distance and time to achieve an outcome. As such, work depletes physical, emotional and mental energy, which each individual experiences uniquely.
Burnout usually involves the crippling burden of the “shoulds” and “supposed tos” that dictate how we live and work juxtaposed with the lack of alternative paths when achievement seems inconsequential, writes Sheela Subramanian.
Her article describes three practices that helped her manage her burnout and take personal agency over her situation.
