In the U.S., several distinct rabies virus variants have been identified in terrestrial mammals, including raccoons, skunks and foxes. In addition to these reservoirs, multiple species of insectivorous bats are also reservoirs for rabies.

INSIGHTS: This is an important reminder to keep vaccinations current with animals in regular contact with humans, including pets. Little fur industry pressure on raccoons, foxes and skunks in recent years has left populations unchecked. Add urban sprawl and it is not uncommon to see rabies reservoir species in our backyards.
