The most recent report indicates that RHDV has spread over 1,000 miles in the last six weeks with no end in sight. Even if a rabbit is indoors-only, they are still at risk of getting infected. At this time, we are recommending all rabbits remain indoors”
Source: House Rabbit Society, June 2, 2020. Link. RHDV is a hardy virus and is highly contagious. It can remain stable for 105 days at room temperature. It is not killed by freezing, and it can survive heat of 122F for an hour. The virus can be spread to a healthy, indoor rabbit by shoes that have come into contact with ground that’s been contaminated, or by other contaminated objects.
INSIGHTS: Note the handouts and sections on disinfection, feed, flies and wildlife. Rabbit owners will appreciate getting this information. We’ll keep an eye on the viral spread as well. If families are planning to travel to endemic areas, it will be wise to advise them to leave the rabbit at home with a caregiver.
