Lennox Intl Inc. voluntarily recalled its Natural Pig ears because they may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to an FDA posting. The recalled products affected were shipped to nationwide distributors and/or retail stores from May 1 to July 3, 2019.
Salmonella can affect animals eating the product and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated products . . .
Source: FDA, July 26, 2019. Link. Lennox is aware of two cases of pig ears that caused dog Illnesses which may be related to the potential Salmonella contamination noted during an ongoing FDA investigation of Salmonella illness, associated with what appears to be a multiple source.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.
INSIGHTS: The risk of salmonella infections increases as more products fall into the natural or fresh categories. As animal health professionals, we need to educate customers about disease infection and prevention over and over. These examples strengthen our position.
