It is important for owners of reptiles, such as turtles, snakes and lizards, and amphibians, such as frogs, toads and salamanders to understand the health risks to themselves and others in their household.
Animal health pros need to advise pet reptiles or amphibians owners about the risk for salmonellosis and the simple steps that can be taken to reduce risk to household members and guests. Reptiles and amphibians can appear healthy and clean, but commonly carry Salmonella spp. It is important to understand that direct contact with a reptile or amphibian is not required to acquire Salmonella spp infection (ie, salmonellosis).
