The holidays are a great time for veterinary teams to make some decisions about dentals < link >. Melissa Detweiler, DVM, discusses the challenges of her love/hate relationship with common oral health procedures and the conversation and marketing that go with it. Beyond the gold standard, she says are two options; skip it or treat what she can. I believe there is another option that can be added; home care.
Ideally, all pet owners would brush their pets’ teeth daily. Instead of skipping over the topic, veterinary teams can select four or five product options for clients to consider. If the practice uses a home care service, an order can be placed in the clinic without having to stock a huge inventory. A few minutes of research at a local pet retailer that is added to information from favored distribution representatives, will give the vet team a good idea of what brands to select for several oral care categories. These include:
- Toothbrushes and paste
- Wipes*
- Chews
- Chew toys
- Water additives

INSIGHTS: I acknowledge that pets like Birdie may be beyond much help from home care. However, clients might consider home care products if presented with the options.
