US Equestrian Federation has released new, official guidelines for horse welfare and safety penalties. To do this, the organization has created rules to govern the actions of its members and protect horses and humans, allowing them to experience the joy of horse sports. The guidelines fall into these categories:
- Excessive use of whip or spurs and improper use of bits
- Illegal equipment
- Cruelty/abuse/neglect
- Death and maiming
- Intentional death for financial or other means
