Thermo Fisher Scientific launched three new AgriSeq targeted genotyping by sequencing (GBS) solutions that allow customers to genotype canines and felines while learning disease and parentage information about their pets. The ready-to-use panels achieve high call rates with reproducible genotyping results. Simple, high-throughput workflow on the Ion Torrent next-generation sequencing (NGS) platform provides results in two to three days.

Link. “In our portfolio, AgriSeq targeted GBS really closed the gap between single plex genotyping and arrays, allowing for flexible panels in the range of 100 to 5,000 genetic markers, combining parentage verification and genetic variants,” said Maarten de Grooot, chief financial officer of VHL Genetics. “The efficient AgriSeq workflow aids in our scientific and operational effectiveness.”
INSIGHTS: The International Society of Animal Genetics has been recommending the need to review the performance of the targeted GBS markers in predicting parentage and traits for companion animals. A targeted GBS method like AgriSeq has an advantage over non-targeted GBS approaches which are highly susceptible to allele drop-outs and missing data. Using the AgriSeq workflow, veterinarians can provide significantly more detailed, critical information to their clients about their pets.
