A leading veterinary professional is focusing on oral care at home. But are clients getting the message? A recent experience indicates oral care is not top of mind*.
Johnathon R. (Bert) Dodd, DVM, FAVD, DAVDC, shares the importance of oral health care for pets. He focuses on gingivitis, daily oral care at home and annual teeth cleanings by veterinarians.
. . . gingivitis causes inflammation of the gums around the teeth and can act as a wake-up call for owners to pay attention to their pet’s pearly whites before more serious conditions develop.” – Bert Dodd, DVM, FAVC, DAVDC

INSIGHTS: Thank you Dr. Dodd!
*My experience: During the first veterinary visit for my new puppy, there was NO discussion about daily oral care. The clinic visit report shows he has a mature incisor yet to come in and to observe it. An abnormal nail was noted. Heartworm and parasite tests were performed. But NOTHING about my responsibility to provide daily oral care.
So, what are the messages in March through January?
- Fresh water
- Proper nutrition
- Not too many treats (fewer than 12 percent of total Kcals)
- Heartworm, flea and tick protection
- Proper vaccinations for all relevant pathogens, including Bordettella, Leptospirosis sp. and Lyme
- Daily oral care?
- Skin, coat care?
There are several daily oral care products in the marketplace today. MaxiGuard® Oral Cleansing Wipes are easy to use and easily tolerated. They are manufactured by AHD Sponsor Addison Biological Laboratories. Click this link to learn more: Link.
