It is important to see the study results here in their context.
- Some abbreviated wash and disinfection is better than nothing
- The study focused on winter freezing conditions
- Only PEDv and Delta Co-V were detected; not PRRS or TGE
- The gold standard is to wash and disinfect a trailer, then dry it at 160°F and maintain that temperature for 10 minutes
Article
Even without the standard 160°F full drying procedure, washing and disinfecting swine trailers offered pork producers a low-cost WINTER biosecurity alternative for eliminating detectable PEDv and Delta-CoV. The focus of research led by Megan Hood, DVM, was to evaluate a modified truck wash method specifically in freezing winter temperatures.
The study evaluated the risk of not performing a full drying procedure in the field and sampled trailers for the presence of PRRS, PEDv, TGE and Delta-CoV with only PEDv and Delta-CoV being detected on trailers before the modified wash and disinfect process.
