Brandon Sinn, DVM, shares information on a troublesome protozoan named for its parvo-like symptoms, Cryptosporidium parvum. He indicates Cryptosporidia burrows into the base of the intestinal villi and eventually moves them off similar to parvo. The result is profuse, bloody diarrhea. Professionals have observed a recent increase in protozoa infections in kennel operations nationwide. Normal treatments for common parasites will not deal with Cryptosporida.

Cryptosporidia is treated on a 3-fold basis according to Dr. Sinn.
- First: Treat the protozoa with tylosin usually in the water.
- Second: Reintroduce good bacteria through probiotic administration to regain a healthy gastrointestinal system.
- Third: Treat any symptoms that present such as dehydration, secondary infections, vomiting and diarrhea.
INSIGHTS: Kennels and shelters share similar risk factors as animals are managed close to one another. Sales representatives will wish to bring up the topic of Cryptosporidia with veterinarians or clients with dog kennels.
