Varieties or types of plants or animals that have developed over time to suit the conditions of a local area are called landrace. For 15,000 years, Bankhar dogs protected livestock and livelihoods on the Mongolian steppe. Nearly lost, the revered dogs are making a slow and intentional comeback.

INSIGHTS: I associated landrace with hogs. Reflecting on the term, I vaguely remember my grandfather talking about the origins of rat terriers as a landrace dog type in the early 1960s. It is an interesting term to consider as we look at the current dog breed proliferation strategies.
