Juneteenth, the date marking the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans and now an official holiday, is this Sunday. The holiday commemorates June 19, 1965, when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and read a federal order abolishing slavery in the state. Though the Civil War ended April 9 of that year, it took Union forces until June to reach Texas with enough personnel to enforce the order.
