Use a gradual process, slowly keeping the cat indoors for longer periods and giving them positive reasons to want to be there . . . make indoors someplace they enjoy and that offers physical and mental enrichment.”
Commentary
Buis notes the ongoing indoor versus outdoor cat discussion and positions her article with the assumption that the subject cats are all medically cleared. With only 7 percent of cats coming from cat breeders <Link> it is likely that outdoor cats are from either free-range or feral origins without previous veterinary care.
Crate or carrier orientation from the start must be considered to ensure cats can eventually receive appropriate medical care. Buis shares a link to her article on cat carriers offering ways to make cat carriers less stressful <Link>.
