If we manage today’s sow genetics with yesterday’s habits, we should not be surprised when born-alive numbers look strong but weaned-pig numbers do not keep pace, writes Rachel Johnson. Despite advanced genetics, facilities, nutrition and management, producers know far too much margin opportunity is still leaving the farrowing house in a dead bucket instead of on the hoof.
Johnson’s article is grounded in metrics, methods and situational realities. Top producers, she asserts, are not winning because of one secret feed curve, one breeding trick or one piece of equipment. They are winning because they execute the basics well, day after day, across the whole sow cycle.
