Human-animal bond research continues to expose the power of animals interacting with humans and vice versa. The Connected Horse program in California is stretching the approach for seniors with dementia, including Alzheimer’s. The program also recognizes the needs of caregivers and uses older horses past their prime. The combination appears effective and is the focus of collaborative research from both animal and human perspectives.

The connections between people and horses have proven to be therapeutic in many populations due to the nonjudgmental, unconditional interactions horses offer to each other and humans. The human-horse connection is especially powerful as the nonverbal responses and behaviors of horses provide immediate feedback and often act as mirrors to participants to provide clarity, strength, and healing.” – Nancy Schier Anzelmo
