Animal health pros can likely identify at least one individual whose “low alcohol” light comes on sometime late afternoon. These individuals function dependably at high levels all day long. However, their reality is a core biological and psychological issue that will never go away.
In this rare, revealing story Ward Richmond shares his discoveries and story as a recovering high-functioning alcoholic. He says, “Getting drunk every night and having the ability to perform at a high level the next day is not “winning.” It is hard-core struggling. If you think you have a problem, you most likely have a major effing problem, shares Richmond. I can assure you that quitting because you knew something horrible was about to happen is going to feel way better than quitting because something horrible did happen!
INSIGHTS: Like driving, alcohol use is a privilege that comes with age. It is an insidious component of gatherings, conversations, business affairs and pastimes that has been modeled by family members, TV personalities, movies and societal culture norms. In my own personal experience, “If you ever awaken one morning and wonder who is in control – you or alcohol – you have already lost control.”
Side note: Richmond references alcohol allergy. A quick Google search exposes controversy about this topic you may wish to study further.
