The war in Ukraine caused a massive animal welfare crisis and limited access to veterinary care for millions of pets. Galaxy Vets Foundation’s first initiative, Animal Help Ukraine, was launched in spring 2022 in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Key facts:
- 275 veterinarians and techs/nurses from the U.S. and the world signed up to volunteer
- The GVF telehealth service processed more than 20,000 chats from pet owners in Ukraine
- Grants covered spay/neuter, medications, food, heat and medical equipment for shelters, military service dogs and rescue organizations.
- $2,600 was raised to support Oleksiy Prytula, a Ukrainian veterinarian who lost both legs while defending Ukraine
The effort created an excellent case for telehealth as a disaster relief solution.”
