Holstein heifer calf prices are reported at double to triple their values from a year ago <Link> as well as being in short supply. Optimizing their growth and development is critical to future potential, lifetime production and health. As warmer temperatures approach, investing in heat abatement is good business.
Similar to mature cattle, calves have a thermoneutral zone of about 50°F to 72°F. In this range, they can maintain their body temperature without having to expend additional energy. Jimena Laporta, PhD, shared heat stress and abatement information in a recent I-29 Moo University webinar <Link>(1:07:45).

Heat stress is the largest challenge affecting the dairy industry . . . it does not discriminate . . . heat impacts cattle of all ages and physiological status.”
INSIGHTS: Consider prioritizing this article and the webinar for dairy producer clients and customers. Veterinary teams might consider occasional reminder emails when temperatures are forecast to exceed 72°F. For example, “Today’s temperatures are forecast to reach mid- to upper- 70s . . . keep those calves shaded and cool.”
