This report confirms much of what we suspected. The cost of veterinary care ranked as the number-1 perceived pet ownership expense or that two-thirds of Americans say vet care costs directly influence their decision to adopt a pet. Three of the top five barriers to pet adoption are financial reasons: veterinary care, the initial cost of the pet and ongoing pet food expense. Time commitment and access to pet-friendly housing round out the top five barriers.
We noted the increased reluctance to adopt large dogs, surging interest in adopting cats and the explanation of challenges associated with fostering a pet. Family and friends continue to be the leading source of providing dogs and cats for adoption. Stray cats were also a significant source of adoptions. The strategies shared about surrender interventions and diversion strategies are worth noting.
