Fans of the veterinary shows on National Geographic TV will recognize the doctors in this photo. Drs Brenda, Emily and many like them face gendered disrespect daily in companion, equine, mixed and large animal practices. Viewers of the programs also see post-treatment interviews where the animal owner admits his concerns about the “little gal” were unfounded.
Come on men, it’s past time to get over it!
The situations in Angela Tufvesson’s article are too familiar in everyday animal health narratives. Difficult client interactions are an unfortunate reality in many vet practices worldwide. For women, she writes, managing these encounters often means navigating underlying power dynamics.
