Prescription help for dogs with noise aversion challenges is on the way. The FDA has announced approval of Pexion® (active ingredient: imepitoin) by Boehringer-Ingelheim to treat noise aversion in dogs. The drug was approved in 2013 in the EU for reducing the frequency of seizures associated with idiopathic epilepsy. Imepitoin is similar to Valium (diazepram) and other benzodiazepines but works in a different way to treat noise aversion.

Pexion® is administered to the dog twice daily starting two days before an expected noise event and continued through the event. It is available in 100 mg or 400 mg scored tablets and is dosed according to the weight of the dog.
Pexion will be available by prescription only, because a licensed veterinarian is needed to determine whether Pexion is an appropriate treatment.
