The latest issue of Equus is full of information about American Pharoah’s Triple Crown winner. He is the first horse in 37 years to win the Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes) since Affirmed in 1978. American Pharoah joins a very exclusive group of equine racing athletes. A deep bruise in his left front hoof might have kept him from racing had it not been for a very unique horseshoe technology the horse has worn since October 2014.
Multiple articles expose readers to aspects of not only American Pharoah, but also the other Triple Crown winners. Special contributions from writer Laura Hillenbrand (author of best sellers Seabiscut: An American Legend and Unbroken) are passionate and informative. Complimenting American Pharoah’s stories, is a discussion article regarding how advances in the management and car of top racehorses have ultimately improved the lives of all horses.

When he walks, American Pharoah’s back feet overstep the hoof prints of his forefeet by a good six inches, a function of conformation that tips the length of his stride. At a gallop he is all forward motion, nothing off to either side, like a power saw cutting lengthwise through a ripe piece of timber. Finally the transition from controlled gallop to racing speed becomes a parlor trick, a sleight of hand so smoothly accomplished that not one notices until it’s too late, and American Pharoah is gone.
