Skin scrapings should be performed to rule out demodicosis with a secondary bacterial folliculitis and furunculosis as the cause of the lesion. Treatment involves completely removing the matted hair and any crusts, which usually involves clipping directly over the lesion. The lesion is then scrubbed with a chlorhexidine based shampoo.
