It is important to select a vet who understands the difference between a housedog and a hunting dog. Here are the things to look for and the questions to ask when visiting a veterinary practice:
- Do you deal with sporting dogs routinely?
- More than one veterinarian?
- What are the clinic days and hours? Weekends?
- Will I be allowed in the exam room with my dog?
- Do you have a surgical specialty or specialists available in case of injury?
- Does the clinic have x-ray and ultra-sound equipment and expertise in using it?
- Tell me about lab work and testing; especially the test results timing.
- Are the post-surgical or procedure boarding facilities structured to hold a working dog?
- Do you have a PennHIP certified staff member?
