We’ve heard a lot about viral variants since the fall of 2019. Swine researchers and veterinarians continue to work toward better understanding of swine diseases and methods of mitigating disease risks. In this study, the researchers sought to understand the potential long-term impact of multiple prevailing PRRSV variants on pig performance.
Their study demonstrated the presence of multiple PRRSV strains, including vaccine and wild viruses, among and within sampling events in commercial breeding and growing swine herds over time. It also demonstrated the presence of multiple PRRSV lineages, sub-lineages and variants in swine herds and its potential association with swine reproductive performance under field conditions.

It also generates hypothesis on the potential negative impact of co-circulation of different PRRSV lineages on production parameters. They recommend this as a focus for future studies.
