Colic is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in horses whose specialized digestive tract is easily thrown out of balance. Experts say 4 percent to 10 percent of all horses will experience at least one episode of colic in their lifetime. While most cases are resolved on the farm with medical treatment, approximately 10 percent to 15 percent of cases need advanced care <Link>.
In our April 26, 2022, post we shared educational resources available for veterinary teams to share with horse owners <Link>. New to the equine digital tools is an updated infographic showing vital signs horse owners can learn to recognize and monitor so they know when to contact the veterinary team for assistance. Available as a PDF, it makes an informative handout to keep with first aid materials or post around a barn or boarding facility.
ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance also has educational programs available to help veterinary teams refresh and update their knowledge and earn continuing education credits.

ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance for horses is designed to lessen concern about the costs of veterinary care so that horse owners have help getting the best care for their horses. It differs from traditional equine insurance because it is a standalone insurance plan for veterinary care reimbursement with options to best fit an individual horse’s needs. Morbidity or mortality coverage is not required for this insurance program.
