December is the time to reset the feeding schedule to dusk hours for cows bred to spring calve, says Glenn Selk. Known as the Konefal method, adjusting the feeding schedule limits night-time calving when observation is more challenging and when temperatures usually lower. University studies have confirmed this method moves calving to daylight hours in as many as 85 percent of the cows.

Although, the Konefal method does not let us completely skip the middle of the night heifer checks, this strategy should help us save more calves that need help at delivery and shortly thereafter.

INSIGHTS: Selk’s article is a good reminder for cattle producers, their farm teams and for veterinary teams that service them. Consider sharing this information on social media and in e-newsletters. If vet teams have clients who historically call them in the middle of the night for help, take time to contact each client and urge them to adjust their feeding time. It could save some Zzzz’s and a few more calves.
